Day 82 - Florence

Boxing Day

Elena and I went shopping today and I bought a whole bunch of nice clothes .

I forget what else we did because I'm writing this two days later - someone  remind me next time I keep a diary/blog that even though I always think I'll remember what happened I really won't!

I do know that it started to snow...

... a LOT.

Day 81 - Florence

Last night

I finally did something that I have been trying very hard not to do all trip: I locked my keys in the boot of my car. Whoops.

I called my car rental company and they were super efficient, they arranged for someone to come out to me in under an hour. Bearing in mind it was past midnight on Christmas Eve (so, yes, technically already Christmas) that's pretty impressive. Oh, and it only cost me $49!!

The guy turned up in a massively beat up million year old car, took one look at my car and said (gruffly) (did I mention he was quite gruff?) "I'll go get my tools" He meant business (gruff as he was)

He came back with a wedge like you'd use to keep a door open, a square inflatable thing with a rubber pump attached (a bit like a less sophisticated version of what they use to take your blood pressure) and a really long crooked wire (a bit like a thick uncoiled coat hanger) (my brother fixes everything with coat hangers so that's when knew he was a man I could trust) Within three minutes he had opened the driver's door which was great. Unfortunately it almost instantly triggered the alarm to go off which was slightly less great (as it was the middle of the night in a quiet neighbourhood which my aunt and uncle still need to live in next week!) He ended up using his long wire to unlatch the boot from the inside (via a hatch in the back seat) and we got it to stop wailing, thank goodness.

Christmas!!

This morning I woke up and it had snowed! Like magic! Proper white Christmas! I was most impressed. Especially given how "unseasonably warm" the rest of the country has been, I was expecting a warm Christmas.

We all sat around the tree opening our presents -  I got a whole bunch of nice things (including loads of presents to open from my mummy who loves me lots) and loooooads of chocolate, I'm very happy.

Susie (my aunt/godmother) decided that we would save the planned Christmas lunch of roast pork til tomorrow because we had so many leftovers from yesterday which is awesome because it left lots more room for chocolate.

Chillaxing

Today I've played cards and helped with a 1000 piece jigsaw and been to the movies to see Django Unchained which was really good but oh dear Quentin Tarantino can't act for toffee, can he?!? Good movie though.

Day 80 - Florence

Christmas Eve

Today has been a strange kind of Christmas Eve. For a start, I didn't have to get up til after 9am (amazeballs) and we had "dinner" at 4pm (double amazeballs, baked ham and chocolate mousse - yum yum yum) AND I've miraculously not pissed anyone off! (or not enough that they've stopped talking to me, anyway - triple amazeballs!)

Elena's cousin and her husband and baby and parents came round and we had a very civilised early dinner so now we're playing cards and reading books (and writing blogs) and generally getting on. Very odd...

Day 79 - New Paltz to Florence

I nearly died in the woods and I ran over a deer

Weeeell... technically I didn't nearly die and the deer was already dead so not as exciting as you may think but hey, it's the headline that grabs you and you're still reading, right?

This morning I decided to explore some of the fancy Hudson River Valley and the Catskills, famous for being second (or third or just holiday) home to the rich people of last century.

I went on the Hudson Walkway Park loop - a 4.5 mile trail that goes across the Hudson River over two bridges. It was interesting (I got to cross over into Poughkeepsie which from first impressions is not so nice) and took nearly two hours, so definitely filled my walking quota for today.

Poughkeepsie station - love that name!

Random that they felt they had to specify
I then stopped at Eleanor Roosevelt's cottage, only to find it was closed. I then tried to go to FDR's house but failed to find it (or got distracted on the way, I forget) so settled on a tour of the Vanderbilt Mansion.

It felt great to go in, flash my (no longer lost) annual NPS pass and get in for free, when everyone else was paying. More for having found my pass than for the shadenfreude, I feel I should add!

All the people that paid full price. Ah, bless.
The Vanderbilts were the richest family in the US (and I believe at one point in the world) and this is only one of the mansions that they built or owned. It was nice to tour it, the lady's bedroom was styled on Marie Antoinette's and was beautiful.

Lady's bedroom, I love the way she's got a cute cage-bed going on
I stopped for lunch at what I believe is quite a famous diner, in Hyde Park (a town, not a park) and had my first root beer float of my trip. I didn't get a picture because I was so embarrassed when it arrived - it was huge! A big glass of root beer with a huge scoop of ice cream AND whipped cream AND a cherry on top! Thankfully it arrived before I'd ordered my food so I was able to change my mind about what I might still have room for.

The bit where I nearly died in the woods

(Gotcha again!)

The main reason for wanting to go to the Catskills was my cousin Elena telling me that, as I had no time to go to the Niagara Falls I should go to Kaaterskill Falls as it is also impressive. Unfortunately for me, I'd faffed about looking at rich people's homes and scoffing root beer floats for so long that by the time I got to the trailhead it was almost sunset. I figured as it was only a half mile hike it would not take that long... wrong!

This is a proper hike (not straight walking like most of these things) You have to clamber over rocks, dead trees and through a stream, rising 300m over half a mile. All of this would probably be ok in daylight, or with a torch, or even with a phone in your pocket. Sadly, I'm a doofus and went out with none of these things. Oh, and it was all snowy and slippery. Anyway, I scrambled up as quickly as I could (all along feeling like an idiot for going into this in low lighting but at the same time not wanting to give up without seeing the falls because what would Elena say?!) and eventually got to where I could see (and photograph) the falls. I have to say, I could have stayed there for hours just looking at this huge waterfall and the rocks and the general loveliness, so my cousin's advice proves to be good once more.

The bottom

The top!
Of course, I had to turn right back and try to find the trail back to my car. The thing is, by this point it was darker and colder and all the snowy rocks I'd climbed up were now icy and downhill - a lot trickier to maneuver. I managed to get back but not without cursing myself all the way. Oh, and being scared stiff that a wolf was going to come out and eat me at any minute. Brrr.

It was a lot darker than the picture. And did I mention I was sure I could hear hungry wolves??

Final destination

This whole trip stemmed from my decision to spend Christmas at my godmother's house in Massachusetts. Well, I made it here!!

On the way here I ran over a dead deer on the motorway which was quite upsetting. It was dead and lying on the road and there was nothing I could do to avoid it because I only saw it once the truck in front of me had gone over it (without touching it because it was a high truck) I tried to position myself so it would go in between my wheels but it still crunched like all hell. I'd forgotten how low my car was  - clearly lower than the height of a dead deer. I can still hear the crunching. It gives me the creepy-crawly-heebie-jeebies.

Day 78 - New York City to New Paltz

See you soon New York City!

This morning I left my super fancy hotel (did I mention my brother had put me up in a super fancy hotel in New York? Essex House, very fancy) and I went to see Alexander Maria and Isabella for the last time for a few days.
This is how fancy the hotel was... breakfast more expensive than most rooms I've stayed in!
We went for a short walk in the park and then Alexander (my oldest brother) and I went to fulfil our yearly tradition of going to a coffee shop and having The Talk. It seems like every time I come to New York I am in the middle of some existential crisis or other and it helps to talk to him. I inevitably end up sobbing but I guess he's used to it by now and he does have some good advice.

On the way out of Manhattan I went through (another) toll but there was no option to pay - you either had to have an EZPass (which I think is a device on your car) or they mail you a ticket for the $4. How can that possibly be more cost effective than having one of those machines that collect money???

Hello New York state!

By the time I left NYC it was later than I'd planned so I ended up driving to Yonkers, finding a Starbucks (again with the free wifi hunting, its the bane of my life!) and I found that there was a hostel in New Paltz, near Poughkeepsie. I forget why I think that name is so funny, but it definitely is.

The hostel I stayed in was nice though it was the first time I've been in a "mixed" dorm and it's just been me and one other guy.

Day 77 - New York City

Don't kill me...

I know a lot of you would love to be in New York City right now and would be doing all the fun stuff but I must confess that all I've done today is sleep. And sleep. Oh, and I had a nap. I just feel really safe and at home here and I'm very tired from my trip!

So I have nothing to share. Not even a photo. I promise to take some tomorrow.

(I have finally updated the last week with photos though if you want to go back and look at those instead)

Day 76 - Ramsey to New York City

Bagels and a tour - nice!

My uncle/cousin (actually my dad's cousin but almost brother) Tony took me out this morning for breakfast and a tour of the area. We had bagels with sausage, egg and cheese. Basically, what McDonald's tries to do and (having seen the original) fails to do well at all. They were delicious!!

We then went for a drive and looked and pointed at all the huge houses - I believe the technical term is "McMansion"

What's that?!

A deer!!

Ramapo Reservation

We went for a short walk around where the locals go for walks and saw lots of fallen trees from Sandy - this is New Jersey don't forget.

Apples

Tony was shocked when I told him how difficult it has been for me to find fruit and vegetables in anything other than industrial quantities. He insisted on taking me to his local supermarket to prove to me that it is possible to buy individual apples!

New York City

Here's a Christmas wreath to distract you from the fact that we are ROBBING YOU BLIND!

Manhattan!

Man - ACTUAL - hattan!!!
I arrived and checked in to the very fancy hotel my fancy brother has paid for me to stay in (because his wife is about to give birth and her parents are in his house) and it is well fancy! I also found somewhere relatively cheap to park my car - $20 a day! So all in all I'm very pleased.

I've seen my niece Isabella who is huge (she's almost 2) and took most of the evening to get used to me. She's so cute! I look forward to spending more time with her when I come back next week.

Hey Natalie, I like the stickers on your laptop - can I eat them?
