Day 32 - Salt Lake City

Oh mama, Obama!

Surprise, surprise, Obama is still president. Whoop! I guess... I feel conflicted - while my (scrap of) political self is relieved, there are some people I love very much who will be really upset. I've decided not to celebrate - that's like being neutral, right?

Besides, watching Romney do his concession speech was pretty sad - imagine that you're nominated for an Oscar, you don't win and you still have to do a speech. Then imagine the whole world is watching because it's not just an Oscar, it's a multibillion dollar race. Man.

Mo' Mormons

Today I went for what I was expecting to be a twenty minute walk around the Mormon Temple. Three hours later I came away feeling even more confused than when I started. Bearing in mind that until recently I thought the Mormons were the ones who go around in carts and don't believe in electricty that's really quite confused.

I came across loads of intelligent eloquent young women whose only "flaw" was that they were telling me about books being taken away by angels. I kept expecting one of them to wink at me on the side. Having said that, I took it very seriously and listened to everything they had to say - unlike some Californian woman who came on one of the tours with me (you're not allowed to go anywhere on your own, there's always a missionary to compliment you and show you around) She kept asking really awkward questions and repeating things the girls had said in a really sarcastic tone "So, an angel came and took it away?" What a douche. You don't go to Disneyland and say "So, this beauty, you say she slept for 100 years and was woken by a kiss??"

As a tourist you are not allowed into the temple (not even all Mormons are allowed in) so instead they have a doll house version of it in the visitor centre:

This is where they christen people - in a pool supported by 12  bulls or oxen or something

The Celestial Room - apparently decorated as close to Heaven as possible

Because of all the time I'd spent with the Mormons I didn't have time to do the other things I'd been planning on doing so I spent the afternoon doing regular person stuff - I checked the oil in my car, I topped up the coolant, I put a gallon of windscreen washer liquid in it (those photos while I drive don't just happen you know!) I also bought some warm clothes, sunglasses, had a bath, dyed my hair... I feel human again!

Tomorrow I intend to go to the Bonneville Salt Flats, where the world land speed records are broken, to drive my Kia real fast like. Apparently it's really dangerous because people get lost and die and whatnot but heck, if I can survive a trip to Costco I'll be just fine.

Bits and pieces

If it ain't broke, don't fix it! A copy of the one in DC

But I don't have an orange flag!!

Most Utah numberplates have the Delicate Arch on them
