Ok, bison. Today I went to Antelope Island with my new friend Chris. It is an island in the Great Salt Lake joined to the edge of the lake by a causeway.
It was chosen as a safe site to put bison sometime in the 19th century and they have blossomed (as much as any humpback furry mammal can) We drove around and saw a few loose bison but then found that most of them were corralled for their yearly medical check.
Just hanging out, by the side of the road |

Bison pooping. |
At one end of Antelope Island there is a Mormon pioneer ranch that is shown as a kind of museum. I saw some pretty cool stuff, some of it a touch anachrosnistic.
THIS is how to make a home homely |
Add some shoehorn drawer pulls, for good luck |
Look Mummy, a cowboy!! |
This is a sheep camp. I have no idea why it's called that. |
On the inside it reminded me of my bus |
I guess this was the ranch laundry room |
I even made a new friend:
The movies
I just went to the movies with a nice girl I met in my hostel (Lauren) We went to see Pitch Perfect which was essentially a two hour episode of Glee. It was funny. There was even some projectile vomitting. Lovely.
Project "talk to a volunteer"
This is John from Texas who has been volunteering at the ranch on Antelope Island for two years. When I asked him what the difference was between buffalo and bison and he said one was a nickname for the other.
A funny story
In the brochure about the ranch I found this gem of a story:
Those little caravans are called sheep camps because that's what herders live in way up in the mountains for months at a time all alone while they watch over their herd of sheep. They're given a dog, a horse, a gun and some food and they are supposed to keep wolves from eating lambs and other ranchers from stealing from their herds.
